Hilary Harkness is a young painter who paints historical scenes (mainly of WWII) populated entirely by attractive women, as a way to include women in history and also liberate them from pre-determined sex roles and expectations. Harkness' scenes always reveal a chain of command that mirrors human nature's will to power and dominance; her cross-sectioned views of ships and buildings offer a God's eye view to give us insight into the teeming microcosms in her paintings. Cecily Brown's paintings first came to the attention of the New York art world in the mid 1990s with paintings that infused abstract expressionist gesture and immediacy with overtly figurative, sexual content "...an attempt to juice up and feminize (its) shop worn vocabulary," according to Roberta Smith. Cecily Brown has exhibited her paintings and drawings worldwide, recently had an internationally traveling solo museum exhibit in 2004, and her works have been acquired by numerous museums and private collections.

Andreas Gursky is a German artist born in Leipzig who studied photography in Dusseldorf under Bernd and Hilla Becher. Each photograph seeks to examine the architecture of everyday life (buildings, crowds, landscapes), sometimes aided with digital retouching, sometimes not. Gursky enjoys a commanding reputation in the photography community with traveling museum exhibits and gallery shows worldwide.

Janine Antoni's work melds the two realms of performance art and sculpture by using everyday activities such as eating and sleeping and washing to create her work. Basing work on her own body in a feminist tradition, Antoni has gnawed hunks of lard and chocolate with her teeth, washed floors with her hair dipped in dye, and has woven brainwave patterns from her dreams into blankets. Janine Antoni is in museum collections worldwide and is represented by Luhring Augustine Gallery.

Keith Haring epitomized the 1980s graffiti art scene with the intuitive, symbology that started on the subways and streets of Manhattan, eventually finding its way into the galleries of New York. Jay Davis is a young painter who debuted in New York in 2000 -- his images are a quirky blend of abstraction and figuration using a vocabulary of architectural forms within landscapes, embellished with retro-psychedelic elements like gradient sunbursts, pinstripes, and pointillist patterning. Davis enhances the otherworldly qualities of his paintings with pristine surfaces, using acrylic on vinyl with an invisible, gestureless hand. Jay Davis is represented by Mary Boone Gallery.

Tom Sachs is a young American artist that has a conflicted attitude towards our consumer culture, on one hand rejoicing in our obsession with brand names and logos, and on the other hand rejecting it by conflating this covetousness with violence and obvious, sometimes awkward, handicraft. The handmade aspect of his work relates to Sachs' interest in bricolage, a can-do, DIY attitude that liberates the artist from preciousness of art-making by allowing for improvisation. Tom Sachs exhibits worldwide and has artworks in important international collections.

As one of the first artists to openly appropriate photographic imagery, Richard Prince's work relates to the idea of what constitutes originality: pure invention vs. a creative context. Prince is most acclaimed for re-photographing images of heroic (but obsolete) Marlboro Men and prepubescent Brooke Shields, but his attack on high culture continued with minimalist paintings marred by bad jokes, and un-artful, crude photographs of bikers and their girlfriends. Prince has been enjoying a terrific reassessment of his influence and his works are now some of the most sought after.

As part of the contemporary vanguard of abstract painting, David Reed takes elements that are ingrained in the very nature of abstraction (specifically the brushstroke), and turns them into exaggerated symbols of artistic creativity. Referencing other traditions like Renaissance chiaroscuro and beatific light, within modern planes that can be found on televisions and computers, Reed's paintings synthesize centuries of visual history. Dan Kopp is a young painter exploring the territory between landscape and still life, abstraction and its ability to describe specific content. Kopp favors desolate scenes populated by natural elements that are otherworldly in a sci-fi way, layered with illusory painterly touches of color and shadow that is enigmatic in the way that a Tanguy painting might be if Color Field had existed then. Dan Kopp is represented by Shoshana Wayne Gallery.

Sang-ah Choi is a young Korean artist interested in updating Eastern art and religious traditions with contemporary flair. Taking Buddhist symbols and rendering them in a Pop-Anime-Disney style, Choi prepares them for aesthetic consumption; icons from fashion magazines and art history are also re-made in this Asian mode, which originated as caricatures of Western features to begin with. Giles Lyon is a young artist based in New York who combines abstract painting with a Pop cartooning. Beginning with the improvised gesture, he embellishes the accident with descriptive, cartoony lines and borders, turning them into writhing compositions that lend themselves to broader associations.
